Sierra Vista opened its doors for service March 28, 2000. It represented a new approach to providing services to California citizens with Developmental Disabilities and was located in Yuba City, California. Sierra Vista was leased and operated by the Department of Developmental Services and provided residential and treatment services for approximately 55 adults who had developmental disabilities and who also had challenging behavioral issues. At the time Sierra Vista opened there were neither appropriate community-based services nor space in the existing developmental centers to serve individuals with these significant needs.

In June 2009, in the midst of California’s severe fiscal crisis, the decision was made to close Sierra Vista as it was determined that the men and women residing at Sierra Vista could be well served in other settings within the community and at other state operated facilities. The last person moved from Sierra Vista on December 8, 2009 and the facility was officially closed on February 28, 2010.
